POLICY ON ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (English Language Requirements)

  1. If English is not your first language, it is essential that your English language skills are good enough for you to undertake an intensive and challenging academic course that is taught and examined in English. Therefore, you may be asked to achieve one of the formal qualifications listed below as part of the conditions of your offer.
  2. IELTS– normally a minimum overall grade of 5.5, usually with 5.5 or above in each element
  3. EU students– a high grade in English taken as part of a leaving examination (e.g the European/French Baccalaureate, Abitur etc) may be acceptable
  4. You are expected to meet the minimum requirement of the Home office as required by any student seeking admission to study in the UK. Please refer to the Home Office guidance on applying for a UK visa: approved English Language test

 

2.       LSC is committed to offer EAL lessons to overseas students who require help with English in order to access the College curriculum. All such students will be assessed upon arrival to establish their standard of English in order to help teacher’s plan future teaching and learning experiences.

 

3.       WELFARE PROVISION FOR STUDENTS FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

LSC is committed to making appropriate provision for the teaching, learning and pastoral wellbeing of our EAL pupils. The college will ensure that the learning needs of each EAL students are identified and fully met and that the qualities they bring to the college are recognised and valued.

LSC aims to promote good practice in the management and care of students whose first language is not English, by providing them with English language support across all areas of the curriculum as required and to provide any welfare support they may need. The ESOL tutors support students whose first language is not English. The aim of this is to enable students to acquire competence and confidence in communicating effectively through writing, speaking reading and listening. Students are prepared for any necessary examinations and are supported in their college studies.
